This painting was commissioned by the brother of one the crew (he was the
nav). The painting was once displayed at a reunion at the old airfield of RAF Croft and many remembered the crew and this incident.
Halifax W7679 EY-? 78 Sqd (4 Group Canadian) took off from RAF
Croft in Yorkshire at 2100hrs, 30 May 1942 with a full bomb load and crew,
the target Cologne. It was the night of the first 1000 bomber raid, on take off the aircraft suffered undercarraige failure and crashed with the bomb load exploding. The entire crew was killed.
