AGAINST ALL ODDS
Oil on canvas.
The original painting was in sunset colours but George was never happy with the effect. For several years the painting hung in the home of a relative but was returned to George upon their death. To quote George, "well I got the damn thing back again didn't I, so I then gave it to some unsuspecting person at the club".
The above is a print created from the original which was desaturated to become a black and white study. It was a stroke of creative brilliance as is evident by the remarkable result.
A picture hidden within a picture, this revised print conjures up many impressions, all an absolute reversal of the original. There is a feeling of deep foreboding as the Lancaster drones headlong from the light into the darkening gloom, it feels certain the boys will not be coming home this trip. By the same token, the cold beauty of the Lancaster as a man made implement of destruction makes a remarkable contrast against the cold beauty of natures implement of destruction "the dark omimous clouds of a gathering storm".
Study it closely, If you could just turn the aircraft around everthing seems better and doing so brings a strong feeling of relief.
